What began as a bare coastal section is now a flourishing native sanctuary—designed with family, lifestyle, and native biodiversity in mind. Over ten years, this garden has evolved into a resilient and vibrant outdoor environment, alive with birds, native plants, and space to unwind.

The Brief
The goal was simple: create a garden that could be enjoyed by all—family, friends, and pets alike. The owners wanted a space that felt connected to its site, coastal setting, that would mature beautifully over time, and ultimately take care of itself.

The Design Approach
Collaborating closely with the architect, the house and garden were designed in tandem, ensuring both worked in harmony from the outset. The garden layout was shaped by the site’s natural contours and prevailing winds, with clearly defined outdoor rooms, living zones, and utility spaces. Shelter and flow were key considerations, alongside the long-term goal of low maintenance and ecological balance.

The Build & Planting
Early work focused on creating a strong foundation: carefully prepared garden beds and lawn, integrated walkways, and an efficient irrigation system. Native plants and trees were selected for their resilience, adaptability, and habitat value, forming a cohesive plant community that thrives in the coastal climate.

The Outcome
Today, the garden is a self-sustaining, family-friendly haven. Bees visit routinely, native birds live here, and sheltered nooks offer space to relax and connect out of the wind. It’s a living example of how thoughtful, environmentally sensitive design can enhance both lifestyle and landscape.

Final Thoughts
While this family-friendly garden brings joy to its owners—it's a living, growing example of how thoughtful design can nurture both people and the environment.
