From Jungle to Garden Sanctuary: Transforming a Wellington Garden

Tucked away in Mt Victoria, this neglected backyard had become a dense tangle of overgrown vegetation and rubbish. But the new owners saw its hidden potential—especially the rare, north-facing aspect. The transformation began with a massive clean-up and carefully pruning a majestic oak tree, revealing a natural canopy of dappled shade.

With the space opened up, the design focused on function and creating a private sanctuary.  Two distinct levels were created: the upper space offering a functional mix of deck, lawn, and productive vegetable garden; the lower level a sun-soaked patio designed for privacy and relaxation. Carefully selected plantings now provide lush screening, seasonal interest, and a welcoming haven for native birds—turning the former jungle into a peaceful garden sanctuary.
