Taupō
What started as a builder’s site is now an elegant courtyard designed to be both beautiful and practical. Located in the heart of Taupō, this project focused on transforming the front of a new build into a low-maintenance, flower-filled retreat that offers year-round enjoyment.
The Brief
With a newly completed home and a blank outdoor canvas, the homeowners were ready to shape a garden that reflected their style and needs. Their vision: a private courtyard for the ground-floor apartment, improved outlook from the upstairs living area, and a planting scheme that included flowers—especially roses—without the burden of ongoing lawn care.
The Design Approach
We worked with the clients to introduce some innovative ideas and deliver a comprehensive landscape design package, including a concept plan, hardscape plan, and tailored planting plan. The design worked with the site’s natural levels, integrating structural elements to ensure flexible usability. Plant selection focused on flowering species well-suited to Taupō’s challenging climate, while drawing on the owners' existing love and knowledge of roses.
The Solution
Experienced local builders executed the hardscaping with precision, creating a strong foundation for the space. The owners then brought the design to life by following the gist of the planting plan, while adding personal selections and rewarding touch to the final result.
The completed courtyard is a cohesive blend of structure, softness, and seasonal colour. Framed views, a well-placed pergola, and thoughtful plant combinations come together to create a low-maintenance outdoor space that’s as enjoyable to use as it is to admire—from above or within.
